Clinicians in South Africa will need to drastically increase the time they allocate to the management of patients living with diabetes (PLWD) in their daily practice as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) prevalence is set to double in the next two decades across the country.
In Africa generally, T2DM occurs at a younger age than in European and Asian settings, with a 2-4% prevalence contribution from individuals younger than 40. This is accompanied by very high levels of diabetes unawareness among sub-Saharan communities.
