Why do some older adults age well and remain active, independent and resilient, while others become ‘old’ before their time and increasingly vulnerable? In this fifth South African Geriatrics Society Masterclass, Dr Greenstein explored practical clinical guidance for the identification, assessment and management of frailty syndrome and ageing. The role of palliative care in supporting older adults with serious illness was discussed by Dr Coetzer, with a focus on clinical decision-making, ethical decision-making and goals of care.
You will learn about:
- Navigating frailty in older age
- Distinguishing frailty from normal ageing, multimorbidity and disability
- Practical tools for recognising and measuring frailty
- How frailty affects clinical decision-making and goals of care
- Individualising management plans for frail older adults.
- An integrated model of palliative care
- Identifying indicators for palliative care referral
- Applying communication strategies for patients with serious illness
- Evaluating ethical and practical challenges in geriatric palliative care.
