SA Geriatrics Society Masterclass Series

The SA Geriatrics Society (SAGS) is proud to present the Masterclass Webinar Series: Mastering the Geriatric Giants, an educational initiative designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to address the most pressing challenges in geriatric medicine.

Spanning 2025 and 2026, this series delves into the six “geriatric giants”—Iatrogenesis, Incontinence, Impaired Cognition, Instability, Immobility & Frailty, and Failing Sensors. Each webinar will feature expert insights, evidence-based practices, and practical strategies for managing these complex conditions in older adults. Through case studies, interactive discussions, and actionable guidance, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to enhance care, promote quality of life, and support healthy aging in diverse clinical settings.

Join us for this transformative series to master the art and science of geriatric care.

Live webinar: 20 February 2025

Iatrogenesis – First do no harm: Reducing iatrogenesis and enhancing disease prevention

In this first talk, we review the main aspects of the geriatric giant “Iatrogenesis”. Fundamentally this is polypharmacy in older people but also includes any medical intervention that usually unintentionally, causes further disease, a harmful complication, or adverse effect.

The second talk covers screening tests and preventative medicine including vaccines in the context of the geriatric patient and how to individualise to each patient and their goals of care.

Live webinar: 19 June 2025

Incontinence

In this talk on incontinence, we will explore topics including urinary and fecal incontinence, dermatological care related to skin conditions caused by incontinence, and the prevention and management of pressure injuries and wounds.

Live webinar: 16 October 2025

Impaired cognition

In this talk on impaired cognition, we will discuss "Delirium The Giant Collapse”, “Dementia... The Slow Crumble," and "Ground Zero: Tips for Caring for a Patient with Dementia."
