One in three T2DM patients will develop kidney disease over their lifetime. Clinicians need to be alert to the possible early presence of kidney disease in their patients and ensure that insulin therapy is selected with the lowest possible hypoglycaemic risk. Dr Kagiso Motse, Nephrologist in private practice, discusses her experience of the treatment of T2DM patients with kidney disease with in Conversation host, Dr Brad Merwitz.
- Identify the risk factors associated with the development of kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
- Recognise early signs and symptoms of kidney disease in patients with T2DM to facilitate timely intervention and management.
- Evaluate insulin therapy options with a focus on minimising hypoglycaemic risk in patients with T2DM and concomitant kidney disease.
Dr Brad Merwitz
Physician & Endocrinologist, Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, Netcare Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg.
Dr Brad Merwitz is a specialist physician and endocrinologist with a special interest in diabetes mellitus (especially Type 2), osteoporosis, cardiovascular risk management, lipidology and general endocrinology. In addition, Dr Merwitz has an interest in novel approaches to metabolic well-being including exercise strategies, intermittent fasting and cold exposure. Since March 2017 Dr Merwitz has been working as an endocrinologist in private practice at Netcare Milpark Hospital and the Mediclinic Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre.
Dr Kagiso Motse
Specialist Physician and Nephrologist, Netcare Ferncrest Hospital, Rustenburg.
Dr Motse obtained her undergraduate medical degree (MBChB) at the University of Stellenbosch in 2008. She went on to complete her medical internship at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) in 2010. Thereafter, she completed her medical community service training at the Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp. She furthered her studies at the University of the Witwatersrand and its associated teaching hospitals, CMJAH, Helen Joseph Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where she completed her specialist physician training. She has a Diploma in HIV Management and a Fellowship of the College of Physicians, FCP (SA). In 2016, she completed her Masters in Medicine (MMed) through Wits University and received a distinction for her dissertation. After working towards obtaining her MMed degree, she commenced a Fellowship in Nephrology at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. She completed her Certificate in Nephrology in June 2018.
