This CPD activity provides an evidence-based review of the role of Bacillus clausii as a spore-forming probiotic in clinical practice.

The article examines preclinical mechanisms and clinical evidence relating to gastrointestinal health, with particular focus on diarrhoeal disease, immune modulation, and infection-related outcomes.

Emphasis is placed on interpreting clinical trial data, understanding proposed mechanisms of action, and applying evidence responsibly within routine patient care. Safety, quality considerations, and appropriate clinical contexts for probiotic use are also discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe the defining characteristics of Bacillus clausii as a spore-forming probiotic and explain how these properties influence gastrointestinal survival and clinical use.
  2. Summarise the clinical evidence supporting the use of Bacillus clausii in the management of diarrhoeal conditions, including acute, antibiotic-associated, and viral diarrhoea.
  3. Discuss the immunological effects associated with Bacillus clausii, including modulation of immune markers and inflammatory responses, as reported in clinical and preclinical studies.
  4. Evaluate the relevance and limitations of current clinical data on probiotics when applying evidence to patient-centred decision-making.
  5. Apply evidence-based principles to determine appropriate clinical scenarios for probiotic use, taking into account safety, quality, and patient-specific considerations.

The CPD questions are based on insights from the presentation you attended, as well as a referenced journal article provided for additional reading. To complete the CPD activity, please answer the multiple-choice questions; each with only one correct answer. You have a maximum of three attempts. Successful completion will earn you 3 clinical CEUs.
