This module provides a practical, evidence-based overview of gut health for primary care, focusing on the foundational role of dietary fibre in microbiome modulation, including its impact on short-chain fatty acid production, gut barrier integrity, and inflammatory regulation. It equips clinicians to recognise common indicators of fibre deficiency and dysbiosis using a time-efficient assessment framework, differentiate probiotic strains based on survival, mechanism of action, and clinical indication, and understand the specific benefits of spore-forming probiotics in supporting barrier function, immune balance, antimicrobial activity, and metabolic health. The module concludes with a clear, stepwise approach to managing common gastrointestinal complaints such as antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, acute diarrhoea, bloating, and constipation by integrating targeted dietary strategies, evidence-based probiotic selection, and appropriate referral pathways.

The CPD questions are based on insights from the presentation you attended, as well as a referenced journal article provided for additional reading. To complete the CPD activity, please answer the multiple-choice questions; each with only one correct answer. You have a maximum of three attempts.
