Ethical issues specific to the practice of allergology and treatment of allergic disease

This activity explores key ethical principles in the referral and management of patients with allergic disease. Participants will gain a practical understanding of the correct referral process, the HPCSA’s latest guidance on supercession, and the application of ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and autonomy in everyday clinical care. The session also highlights the global focus on good governance and ethical practice, raises awareness around the misuse of unproven allergy tests, and examines the growing influence of social media on patient decisions. The multidisciplinary approach to managing chronic allergic disease and how to identify qualified allergologists will also be addressed.

Professor Matthias Haus
Specialist Allergologist & Academic School of Medicine, University of Pretoria

Professor Matt Haus is a distinguished medical scientist, allergologist, and academic affiliated with the University of Pretoria. Beyond medicine, he is a prominent businessman and philanthropist, previously serving as Lead Independent Director on the board of Adcock Ingram and chairing various organisations, including the Allergy Society of South Africa and PPS Financial Services.

With over three decades of experience in global clinical research for AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, he has lived and worked internationally, including a stint in Shanghai.

He is a recognised speaker and author across medical, business and philosophical fields, and is especially passionate about cancer care, having founded the Moments in Time Oncology Project. His accolades include an Honorary Fellowship from the Colleges of Medicine (2020) and several national awards in science and oncology.
