															In this episode Dr Theron and Dr Zenda will explore the full spectrum of contraceptive choices, from initiating contraception in younger women through to tailoring options during the perimenopausal years. The discussion addresses clinical considerations, patient preferences, safety, and evidence based best practice to support healthcare professionals in optimising contraceptive care across a woman’s reproductive life course.

- Contraception is not a one size fits all, choosing a contraception should always be individualised based on the women’s age, medical history, lifestyle needs, accessibility and ease of use.
- Understanding the diverse options of contraceptives, how they work, the efficacy, side-effects, allows clinicians to prescribe suitable method tailored to the patient. this knowledge also empowers the clinician to deal assist clients with side effects and accordingly change methods where necessary.
- Dual contraception – not all contraceptive methods provide protection against STI, counselling women about dual contraception
- Access to accurate information from reliable sources.
- Ongoing conversations are necessary to eradicate myths, improves compliance and empowers women to choose a contraceptive best suited for them.
- Males need to be part of the conversation and encouraged and taught about the male contraceptive available to them. This helps distribute the burden of contraceptive use, and empowers men to be an active part of choosing when and how many children they desire
Dr Nompumelelo Zenda
Dr Nompumelelo Zenda, widely known as Dr Gynae, is a leading South African Obstetrician-Gynaecologist and Sexologist recognised for her expertise in women’s sexual and reproductive health. Based in Johannesburg, she is the founder of We See You, a consultancy offering innovative solutions in sexual and reproductive health and wellness, and holds esteemed memberships with the European and International Societies of Sexual Medicine. With an MBChB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and an FCOG(SA) from Wits, she further specialised through the ESSM School of Sexual Medicine and is a Fellow of the European Committee of Sexual Medicine. Her work extends beyond clinical practice, where she advocates for women to embrace their cyclical nature and achieve holistic wellbeing, and into media, as a presenter and expert on shows such as Sunday Sexy Love, Sex & Pleasure, and Married at First Sight, as well as a Clicks Wellness Expert. She is also the author of Mommy, My Body’s Changing: A Girl in Bloom’s Trusty Handbook for Growing Up, aimed at breaking taboos around puberty and menstruation. With her dynamic media presence, social advocacy, and dedication to women’s health, Dr Gynae has become a trailblazer in her field, earning recognition including a 2022 DSTV Content Creator Award nomination for her contribution to social causes.
