This third masterclass from the South African Geriatric Society’s series of six ‘Geriatric Giants’ masterclasses focuses on dementia and delirium in older adults, providing practical guidance on real-world clinical and supportive care.

Dr Petro Frankenfeld

Dr Petro Frankenfeld is a Specialist Physician and Geriatric Medicine sub-specialist who provides comprehensive care for adults over 65 with complex needs, including multi-morbidity, polypharmacy, frailty, dementia and frequent falls. Originally from George, she completed her medical degree at the University of the Free State before moving to Cape Town, where she undertook her internship at Victoria Hospital and community service in Paarl and Wellington, managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and HIV. Driven to improve care for patients with chronic diseases and related complications, she worked for several years in Internal Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital, where she later qualified as both a Specialist Physician and a Geriatric Medicine sub-specialist. With a strong interest in palliative care, the focus of her MMed, Dr Frankenfeld is committed to holistic, quality-of-life-centred care. Outside of work, she enjoys art, reading and spending time with her family in nature.

Dr Brent Tipping completed his undergraduate, specialist and sub-specialist training in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Cape Town before relocating to Johannesburg in 2007 to establish and lead the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, based at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre and Helen Joseph Hospital. He now practises full-time in academic private practice at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, with a primary clinical and research focus on cognitive health and disease in ageing. Appointed Adjunct Professor in Internal Medicine at Wits in 2017, he remains closely involved in training geriatricians and specialist physicians. Dr Tipping is an investigator in the cognitive function and dementia substudy of the HAALSI longitudinal project and serves on the executive of the FCPSA as well as the Board of the SAPPF. In his free time, he enjoys bush adventures with his family, ideally far from cellphone reception.

Sr Justine Douglas is a seasoned healthcare professional with more than thirty years’ experience across clinical nursing, pharmaceutical practice and elder care management. Trained in General Nursing, Psychiatry, Midwifery and Community Health Nursing at the Natal College of Nursing at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, she later complemented her clinical expertise with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Her career spans frontline patient care, leadership roles in the pharmaceutical sector at companies including Wyeth (now Pfizer) and Adcock Ingram, and a more recent focus on gerontology and aged-care innovation. Now Healthcare Manager at Manor Life Group, she leads a multidisciplinary team delivering integrated, home-based healthcare solutions that support ageing in place, championing collaborative, evidence-based, relationship-directed care that prioritises dignity, autonomy and quality of life for older adults.
